Artist Bio:

currants is the solo music project of Em Ritchie, a multi-instrumentalist and interdisciplinary artist whose work moves fluidly between music, visual art, creative writing, performance, and environmental design. A classically trained pianist with over 30 years of experience, she has developed a versatile sonic language that includes voice, drums, guitar, and bass, shaped through years of live performance and collaboration.

The sound of currants moves through psychedelic folk with influences of grunge, post-punk, and medieval tonalities. It weaves together ethereal, experimental, improvisational, and minimalist approaches. Within this project, Ritchie is actively developing an exploration in experimental performance art, extending her practice into immersive and interdisciplinary forms.

She has spent the past decade performing across genres and projects, most recently as a member of the Berlin-based post-punk band Lobsterbomb, with whom she has toured throughout Germany. A notable highlight includes opening for Duran Duran at Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin. Before relocating to Berlin, she performed in the San Francisco disco-punk project Business Casual, alongside a wide range of other musical collaborations.

Grounded in experiences of the natural world and shaped by visions and dreams, her work builds immersive environments that blur the boundaries between sound, image, and space.

“Tumbleweed” is the first single from the upcoming EP „Nur ein Traum“. The track drifts through themes of uncertainty and movement, tracing the unpredictability of circumstance and the attempt to move through shifting conditions with fluid adaptability. The song features Marea Idria on supporting guitar and vocals.

The upcoming EP Nur ein Traum from currants, the solo project of Em Ritchie, continues her exploration of psychedelic folk and experimental sound worlds shaped by improvisation, medieval tonalities, and minimalist structures. Across the record, Ritchie builds a series of songs that move through states of transformation, isolation, memory and return, holding fragmentation and reconstruction in tension.

The opening track, Stain, reflects on the transformative properties of materials and inner states, exploring the presence and absence of pain and the possibility of transcendence through process rather than resolution. Tumbleweed turns toward movement and uncertainty, tracing the unpredictability of fortune and circumstance, and the attempt to move through shifting conditions with fluid adaptability.

Fields of White explores profound isolation following trauma, where connection fractures—where encounters with others reflect a shared experience of rupture. Within this landscape, moments of respite are found in interactions with animated environments, where natural spaces briefly hold coherence and meaning outside of human collapse. This thread continues into Meadows, an exploration of the memory of a meadow from ancient times, where remnants of folk celebrations are unearthed in the present.

The EP moves further into Exile, where isolation becomes so complete that even dreaming reflects disintegration. Across the record, grief runs as an undercurrent, not as a single event but as an ongoing process of reckoning with loss and rupture.The closing track, Frond, returns to piano and gestures toward regeneration, where memory is not erased but recontextualized through attention to small, living forms—like the quiet emergence of new ferns.
