RTN014 / currants – Nur ein traum

currants is the solo music project of Em Ritchie, a multi-instrumentalist and interdisciplinary artist whose work moves fluidly between music, visual art, creative writing, performance, and environmental design.

The EP continues her exploration of psychedelic folk, shoegaze and experimental sound worlds shaped by improvisation, medieval tonalities, and minimalist structures. Across the record, Ritchie builds a series of songs that move through states of transformation, isolation, memory and return, holding fragmentation and reconstruction in tension.

RTN013 / TON – UFO

UFO started with analogue photography and a roll of film maturing for a year after a bath in film-soup of acids and liquids, melting the emulsion and its silver bromide. These stills were transformed into videos via AI used as a tool. Various starting points, with multiple iterations, became moving pictures. That was the basis to create a three-dimensional space, in which black and white information and values were responsible for the parametric landscape design. The animated footage was therefore also used to define the colour spectrum and the visual finish of the surfaces. Inside this fictional architectural context there is an interaction between an auditory frequency spectrum and a variable greyscale of the moving images correlating and creating a surreal dreamscape and its own environment. The extraterrestrial protagonist explores, together with the viewer-listener, this new digital world of nostalgic analogue origins.

โ€žMusic culture was central to the projection of the futures which have been lost. (โ€ฆ) [The refusal to give up on the desire for the future] gives the melancholia a political dimension, because it amounts to a failure to accommodate to the closed horizons of capitalist realism.โ€œ – Mark Fisher

RTN009 / lacrush โ€“ Heartbeat

Heartbeat – whose poetic beginnings lie in the confusion of the first Corona lockdown – is an unflinching exploration of emotional turmoil, self-empowerment and the complexity of personal growth. The EP takes you on a transformative journey, guided by a heartbeat you can feel in every note.

An introspective, spherical Intro segues into the pulsating, raw energy of the eponymous song Heartbeat. Here, lacrush opens the stage for a rebellion – against the expectations of capitalism, against conformity. It challenges the status quo and celebrates emotional liberation and the strength of solidarity. This is followed by the catchy, infectious single Solo, which explores personal struggles to regain autonomy and heal past wounds. While Second Skin – the album’s driving ballad – deals with the failure of love and the tension between intimacy and independence, Bit my Tongue describes the letting through of grief as a liberating act with vulnerable, raw clarity.

The fiery, playful single Slut gives Heartbeat a succinct ending and leads back to the rebellious, political opening of the EP. Slut deals with sexualized violence and tells of the process of reappropriating one’s own pleasure. The song rebels against widespread narratives that glorify experienced violence as a self-inflicted consequence of โ€œsloppyโ€ behavior and thus brings us back to the socio-political dimension of our emotional abysses.

RTN008 / TON โ€“ Rooms

TON is an experimental studio and recording project from Berlin.

Originally planned from Julien Siemann as an electronic and sample project, TON has emerged into an experimental sound design project with more people participating in different positions and times โˆ’ Vincent Wedel (Mixing & Guitars), Lizz (Vocals), and Karen Dhios (Vocals, Vocal Production, Mixing & Recording).
Without their ideas, participation and creativity, the new EP ‚Rooms‘ would not sound as diverse. For this release, TON are working together on a collaboration and feature basis. The project is constantly in transition – as are the songs.

The EP manages to merge Postโˆ’Punk and Noise (Rock), Dark Wave, Doom, Industrial and Electronic Music, creating a wide scenery of sounds on ‚Rooms‘.
All the notes guide the listener through a concept of sonic spaces, each forming its own auditory identity and experience.
The project commununicates the change of connotation, meaning, expression and perception through the recontextualisation, staging and alienation of a note, a genre or a sequence. This idea first took place by means of temporal deformation of a sound on tape recorders โˆ’ TON’s contemporary tool is the DAW and sound design. The computer and the studio are equally played instruments like guitar and drums. On ‚Rooms‘, TON create a sometimes monotonous, sometimes complex environment, which constantly changes and crossing genres through its arrangements and production.
